When Richard and Sheelagh Johnson crossed the English Channel in 1990 to begin a new life in France; little did they know that they would not only experience changes in their own lives but would influence a change in the lives of many abandoned and suffering animals.
The couple moved to the Dordogne area and as animal lovers they noticed the high number of stray cats and dogs. Initially they cared for the animals themselves, finding new homes for them when they could within their own community.
In 2001, in order to receive donations and continue their work, they became Phoenix Association France, a registered French charity. Still to this day, they receive no state funding and rely on donations to fund veterinary, fostering and re-homing expenses. All donations go towards helping animals in need. The sole aim of Phoenix is dealing with the sad plight of the ever-increasing number of animals in need in the South West of France.
Sadly, due to the high rate of abandonment and breeding, 250,000 animals or more are euthanized in France every year; Phoenix hasn’t a magic wand to fix this, but it does have the next best thing – that is the willingness to work hard, every day, in the interest of suffering animals.
Phoenix has grown since the early days. Richard and Sheelagh have attracted a loyal following. It is just amazing the number of people who want to volunteer their time. The book team holds two book fairs a year and raise a considerable amount of money to enable Phoenix to continue.
Phoenix takes in abused and abandoned animals, supporting them in a voluntary network of foster homes and then placing them in loving, permanent homes. We work with maximum care and attention with a small number of animals at a time.
In addition to fostering and rehoming animals in need, Phoenix also:
- acts as an intermediary between local animal shelters and members of the public wishing to adopt from them.
- promotes sterilisation and campaigns for the systematic sterilisation of all animals offered for adoption by shelters
Recently Phoenix has introduced ‘The Phoenix Pensioner Plan.’ It is an award that provides a Veterinary Voucher for each of the eligible dogs adopted from the Bergerac SPA.
This highlights exactly what Phoenix does – helping animals in need, to find homes. The older dogs are so rewarding but often need a bit of extra help to be adopted, and this scheme should certainly improve their chances.

Quand Richard et Sheelagh Johnson ont traversé la Manche en 1990 pour commencer une nouvelle vie en France; Ils ne savaient pas qu’ils ne subiraient pas seulement des changements dans leur propre vie, mais qu’ils influeraient sur un changement dans la vie de nombreux animaux abandonnés et souffrants.
Le couple a déménagé dans la région de la Dordogne et comme amoureux des animaux ils ont remarqué le nombre élevé de chats errants et de chiens. Au début, ils se sont occupés des animaux eux-mêmes, en trouvant de nouveaux propriétaires pour eux quand ils pouvaient dans leur propre communauté.
En 2001, afin de recevoir des dons et de poursuivre leur travail, ils sont devenus Phoenix Association France, organisme de bienfaisance français enregistré. Jusqu’à ce jour, ils ne reçoivent aucun financement de l’État et comptent sur des dons pour financer les dépenses vétérinaires, encourager et de ré hébergement. Tous les dons sont destinés à aider les animaux dans le besoin. Le seul objectif de Phoenix est de faire face au triste sort du nombre toujours croissant d’animaux dans le besoin dans le Sud-Ouest de la France.
Malheureusement, en raison du taux élevé d’abandon et de reproduction, 250 000 animaux ou plus sont euthanasiés en France chaque année; Phoenix n’a pas une baguette magique pour résoudre ce problème, mais il a la meilleure chose suivante – c’est la volonté de travailler dur, tous les jours, dans l’intérêt de la souffrance des animaux.
Phoenix a grandi depuis les premiers jours. Richard et Sheelagh ont attiré un fidèle suivant. C’est incroyable le nombre de personnes qui veulent faire du bénévolat. L’équipe du livre tient deux foires du livre par année et soulève une quantité considérable d’argent pour permettre à Phoenix de continuer.
Phoenix prend chez les animaux maltraités et abandonnés, en les soutenant dans un réseau volontaire de foyers d’accueil, puis les placer dans des foyers permanents, aimants. Ils travaillent avec le plus grand soin et attention avec un petit nombre d’animaux à la fois.
En plus de favoriser et de réhabiliter les animaux dans le besoin, Phoenix a également:
- agit en tant qu’intermédiaire entre les refuges d’animaux locaux et les membres du public qui souhaitent en adopter.
- favorise la stérilisation et les campagnes de stérilisation systématique de tous les animaux proposés pour adoption par les abris
Récemment, Phoenix a introduit «The Phoenix Pensioner Plan». Il s’agit d’un prix qui fournit un bon vétérinaire pour chacun des chiens adoptable à la SPA de Bergerac.
Cela met en évidence exactement ce que fait Phoenix – aider les animaux dans le besoin, de trouver des maisons. Les chiens plus âgés sont vaut la peine, mais ont souvent besoin d’un peu d’aide supplémentaire à adopter, et ce régime devrait certainement améliorer leurs chances.
